DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction San Francisco

In the mid-1990's it was recognized that the TRAM flap could be harvested without the rectus abdominis muscle by dissecting the blood vessels (the perforating vessels to the skin and fat) through the muscle (see figure 2). This flap, called the deep inferior epigastric perforator or DIEP flap (see figure 3), uses the same skin and fat of the lower abdomen as the TRAM to reconstruct a breast.

It should go without saying that plastic surgery is not for everyone. For that matter, the same can be said for brussels sprouts, rock'n'roll, and the Lakers. Wherever you stand on the issue, most of us can agree on the potential benefits of restorative surgery for one who has been forced to part ways with a part of their body. While the loss of a breast won't interfere with the physical ability to walk or use one's hands, the emotional impact can be just as significant. Dr. Kind, who provides San Francisco Breast Reconstruction, refers to breast reconstruction as "one of the most...rewarding areas of plastic surgery."
